Test Pieces for Arts & Industry Show

I am currently working on a proposal for a show at YorkArts in York, Pennsylvania. The concept is to partner artists with Industries in the York, PA area. I toured the plant of Adhesives Research, Inc. on Friday. They specialize in creating adhesives that other industries then utilize in their products. They were kind enough to give me a tour and some samples of their products and some scrap pieces left over after they have processed their product. I have been working today on some tests with their materials. Here are some pictures of the results. I am especially happy with the white foam pieces. I can't make up my mind which I like better, the flat foam piece or the 3-D foam piece.

FIBERARTS MAGAZINE FEATURE

Do you know how awesome it is to open a magazine you have subscribed to for 15 years and find your own work featured on one of the pages? I hope everyone of you does, becauase it feels mighty nice. I am very excited to tell you that this piece, ZIPPA BASKET and a photo from the DIGEST series is in the Sampling section of the November/December 2007 issue of FIBERARTS magazine. This issue also features Jerry Bleem. I took a two week workshop from Jerry at Haystack Mountain School of Craft in Deer Island, Maine in 2004. He inspired not only my artwork, but also the way I teach art to community members. I am interested to see he is branching away from his staple sculptures and working with crochet and flags. Kind of neat that we are both featured in this issue which focuses on textiles in 3-D.

Community Arts at Shrine Mont Continued....

The second project we did this weekend at Shrine Mont was crazy hats. Essentially, we cut up strips of paper and then stapled them together in sculptural hats of every shape and size. This project is one I have done quite often with several community groups. It started during the celebration for the new playground at the Stadium Place YMCA in Baltimore. Where two of my classmates in the Master's of Community Arts Program and I had to create an interactive project for community members to participate in during the celebration. We actually thought the project was going to be about making bracelets, but the participants started making hats out of the slips of paper, the rest is history. I have done the project for Greenbelt New Year and I even did the project at the Elementary School I went to in Salt Lake City (Twin Peaks Elementary) when I visited there last year! I might blog about that later, just so I can post those photos.

Prayer Flag Community Arts Project at Shrine Mont

The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia has a lovely retreat center called "Shrine Mont" it is an old resort centered around a shrine built entirely out of local rocks. There are also several springs in the area. It is beautiful this time of year, leaves are begining to change and the mountain air is crisp and clean. Our church, Saint Andrews of College Park, Maryland goes to Shrine Mont this time every year. Every year I am called upon to create some sort of Community Art project for the folks of Saitn Andrews to participate in. This year we did Prayer Flags. Based on the idea of Tibetan Prayer Flags, I gave each participant a flag with a print on it, they then drew on it or wrote words to remind them of what they wanted to reflect on or pray about while at Shrine Mont. We then tied the flags together and hung them on the "Maryland House" which was the building where we were all staying. The idea of prayers flying up to heaven as the fabric unravels has always been mystical to me. The flags really looked beautiful in the mountain sunlight. I hope your weekend was as nice as mine. enjoy!
