RIVER BRACELETS

This project was part of the Greenbelt Girl Scout's Thinking Day Program. Thinking Day is a worldwide program in which Girl Scout troops study a different country and then do a performance having to do with the culture of the country and make an ethnic dish from the country to share. In addition, this year we also spoke bout water resources and availability to the girls in our country.

Thus, the 'river bracelets' I asked the girls about their countries and the prime bodies of water in the country. Then they made bracelets from wool to represent their countries water resources. Each girl made a beautiful bracelet out of a variety or blue wool roving from Leighton Farms (I have found them to be the best place to get beautiful, clean, natural wool roving).

My troop. Brownie Troop 2871 studied Brazil. We went downtown and visited theWilson Institute, that has a great photo exhibit about Brazil, specifically the Amazon region of Brazil. friend of mine from Brazil provided Brazilian cheese bread and candy from Brazil. The kids had a great time and learned a lot.

AMERICAN CRAFT SHOW @ Baltimore

I checked out the American Craft show this weekend at the Baltimore Convention Center. My Graduate School pal, Rachel Robinson and I perused the stalls and even bought a few things!! Here are a few crafters who stood out.

The first is Lacey Jane Roberts she had this cool neon pink installation on display at the very front of the show. This installation, called "WE COULDN'T GET IN. WE COULDN'T GET OUT" was pretty cool and really unlike most of the fiber work to be found INSIDE the show. Hooray for her and for the American Craft Council for emphasizing new, edgy work by emerging artists!!

The second artist who cought my eye was Cindy Luna. This artist travels to Baltimore all the way from Hawaii with her beautiful, simple stainless steel baskets. These pieces are not only affordable, but they really have a peaceful presence about them, just like thier creator. Rachel bought one, and I have one from a previous yeaar.

The third picture is of ceramacist Lois Arnow. She make beautiful porcelain work with white and black glazes that are stunning. Here is a picture of me purchasing a lovely sugar bowl for my kitchen.

The last picture is work by Recycled artist Elizabeth Delehaunty. Her line of clothing, called ELIZABETHAN is created using entirely recycled fabrics. I so believe in this sort of thing. There was way to little of this type of work at the fair, next year I hope to see more emphasis on recycled items. This year they gave the recycled craftspeople a GreenCraft logo, which is definately a start.

Why do I buy things at the ACC? I feel very strongly that, as artists we should support one another. I try to keep the good art Karma going. Whenever I sell a work, I purchase another work from someone else. It makes their day, and I get something that reminds me of how lucky I am to live the life I live.

Paper Relief Projects with the 2nd Grade

Here are a few pictures of the paper relief sculptures the 2nd Graders did during my residency at Lucy Barnesley. The studenst took book pages and made them into 'paper sticks'. Then they glued the sticks onto a piec of Bristol board. They also watercolored some of the sticks to get a bit of color. I think they turned out really nice.

Flat Stanley Visits Washington DC

My nephew sent us his Flat Stanley project to take around Washington DC. If you aren't familiar with the project, it is based onthebook "Flat Stanley" by Pete Seeger. In the book, a smallboy, Stanley Lambchop gets flattened by his bulletin board. He then has an assortment of adventures, including being mailed to California to visit his cousins. That is where this project comes in. Students create small, flat versions of themselves and send them to friends and relatives who document Stanley's adventures and send him back to his owners. We had alot of fun. The best part was taking Stanley to see the Steven Colbert portrait at the portrait gallery!
