Night at the Museum

The Sixth Grade team at Lesher IB Middle School in Fort Collins, Colorado did a fantastic job helping their students create the "Night at the Museum" project. The project was a culminating event for the sixth grade students following an intensive unit where each student chose an historic figure and then wrote a paper, created a presentation board and wrote a monologue they later performed while dressed up as their person. The result was a wonderful art based learning experience. Art teacher , Ms. Frain added to the experience by having he 6th grade art students create a plate reflecting something about the character the students chose (a la Judy Chicago's Dinner Party. It was a great time! Hats off to Principal Dr, Dodd and the sixth grade team!

Laundry on Lawrence Grand Opening

I am pleased to have these two pieces; CREEP and LEAP in this show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This show will be part of the VANGO! Program at the Susquehanna Art Museum. VanGo!'s 2011-2012 exhibit is From Ordinary to Extraordinary: The Art of Being Green, and will showcase prominent contemporary artists working in a variety of artistic media and utilizing a wide range of recycled, re-used and repurposed objects and/or materials to create innovative art. The show will travel all over Pennsylvania to provide schools an opportunity to show their students an art exhibit without leaving town. It is a cool program and I am delighted to be a part of it.

Here are some installation photos of the "Art of Our Century" exhibit at the Woodbury Art Museum in Orem, Utah. Melissa Hempel did a great job installing the work and Juror Erin Linder kindly awarded my piece, VALVE with an honorable mention.

I recieved a nice CD containing images of the installation. Very classy. I wish all curators of large group shows would send images of the show, especially if there are artists who live too far away to see the work in person.

Kansas City Artists Coalition Show!

The Lincoln Center presents the Fort Collins Studio Tour - a free self-guided tour of artist studios in and around Fort Collins - June 25 & 26, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. both days. Visit the Preview Exhibition at ArtLab, 239 Linden Street, to view an artwork from each artist on the tour, and join us there for the Preview Reception on Friday, June 24, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Maps to the studios are FREE and will be available starting May 23rd at the Senior Center, Northside Aztlan, the Gardens at Spring Creek, all three Poudre River District Library branches, and at ArtLab.

Here are the finished pieces for the "Faces of Bennett" Community Art Project. I had a wonderful time working with Bennett IB World School's Art teacher, Molly Babcock (of Masks at MOCA Fame) on this project. Each panel is created using cotton broadcloth as a background and the felted portraits sewn on to the front. Each 5th grader created a 'self portrait' for the piece that will be left at Bennett as a momento from the class of 2011.

Here are some pictures of my latest Community Arts Project. It is called "Faces of Bennett" I am working with kids at Bennett IB World School in Fort Collins, Colorado to create a school-wide tapestry of faces using felting techniques. The Graduating 5th Grade students are assembling the faces using facial features created by the Kindergarten-4th grade students. This is a great project to use to introduce Community Arts and also Fiber Arts. I will post finished pictures when the piece is assembled.

Fort Collins Studio Tour

I just found out that I have been accepted to participate in the Fort Collins Art Studio tour. The Fort Collins Studio Tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26, 10 am – 5 pm both days. The Fort Collins Studio Tour is an educational experience that enhances the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts by giving people a first hand experience with the artists in their studios, the creative process and the artwork.

The Fort Collins Studio Tour is free to the public. Visitors may pick up the map/brochure at the Lincoln Center
and other locations around Fort Collins, or may download it from the internet at www.lctix.com. Several bike
loops will be noted on the map to encourage visitors to leave their cars at home while visiting the studios. Artists
will be ready to make arrangements for pick-up or delivery of artwork.

The Lincoln Center will host an exhibit featuring one artwork from each artist from June 23rd – 26th at the Art
Lab gallery. A public reception for the artists will be held on Friday, June 24th, 6-9 p.m

I was just notified that my piece, "Beauty School Dropout" has been given the Juror's award in the show "Women: Relationship and Identity" Women: Relationship and Identity is a fine art exhibition juried by Rachel Epp Buller, and a visual conversation about the role relationships play in the identity of women.

Whether implicit, explicit, self-imposed or from a Western sociologic construct, women are generally regarded as the more relational gender. Participating artists examine the various relationships women share, the ways those relationships contribute to their own sense of identity and the impact they have on other’s perceptions – ultimately leading to a broader understanding of the role and identity of women.

Dangerous and Hard to See

Arizona State University, with the Bragg's Pie Factory, announces an all-media juried exhibition to be held Feb 4-25, 2011. Dangerous and Hard to See is a juried exhibition intercepting the conventions of gallery exhibition. Most often, the platitudes of traditional display are unwittingly heeded if not willfully ignored. This exhibition confronts gallery standards through humorous and/or critical execution. Desired works address traditional modes of presentation and function as institutional critique. Artists may choose to intervene through wall labels, lighting, viewer interface, scale, materiality, etc.

I am pleased to say, this piece, "This Side Toward Screen" will be included in this exhibit. If you live in or near Phoenix, check it out.

People's Choice Award

This piece CHOKING HAZARD was awarded the People's Choice prize at the Fiber Art show at Art Matters Gallery in Salida, Colorado. The show ran during December and I just received my prize in the mail. Thanks everyone! The piece is now on its way to Truman State University to be in an exhibit called "4 REAL 4 FAUX - Animating the Vernacular". Should be a great show.

Artist Talk at Laurel Elementary

One of my favorite parts of being an Artist is giving Artist talks to kids. Kids really respond to my work and I think it is great to give them a real live Artist to talk to and remember. I will be meeting today with the kids at Laurel Elementary. Laurel used to have an Artist in Residence through FCMOCA. Unfortunately, that program was discontinued. I hope that through this speech we can make another residency happen for Laurel!

New Studio

We tried to use recycled materials whenever we could; recycled tile flooring, Beetle kill pine ceiling, reused doors.....I am still getting to know the space. Candice Breitz, Working Class Hero (A Portrait of John Lennon)

On the anniversary of John Lennon's death, I woke up thinking about this installation I saw at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art last year. Artist Candice Breitz assembled John Lennon fans and recorded each of the individually singing the entire WORKING CLASS HERO album. The results are fascinating. The power of this mans lyrics and how they continue to touch people, many born after his death, is amazing. This is a video of the first song on the album. enjoy.

FRCC students curate art exhibition that includes Webosphere elements

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – When museum/gallery studies students at Front Range Community College open their fourth annual juried art exhibition Friday, Dec. 3, at the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, they also will be staging the exhibition in the Webosphere.

The exhibition, “Object, No Object: Sculpture of Ideas,” aims to explore conversations around the topic of contemporary sculpture. Students in the class are the jurors and curators of the exhibition which, because it is open just one day in a physical place, also could be called an “art happening.”

The one-day on-site exhibition will feature sculptural installations of local artists Rachael Browning , Keith Jentzsch, Martin Mayer, Elizabeth Morisette, Amy Reckley , Frank Stanley and Sarah Vaeth.

But “Object, No Object” also is an online international invitational exhibition that will be broadcast from Dec. 3 to March 3, 2011, via the exhibit’s social media sites on Twitter, Facebook and through an interactive Web site. See http://be-art-smart.blogspot.com/.

“Museum /Gallery Studies students seek to incorporate social networking as a means to involve the audience in an ongoing and open forum about sculpture,” said Kathy Webb, an independent study student who set up the online presence. “By doing so, the students illustrate that the exhibition creates a virtual structure on its own, a ‘Sculpture of Contemporary Culture.’ It is the students’ highest intention that the dialog which is created by both the on-site and online exhibitions will continue beyond the exhibition dates.”

FRCC is the only community college in Colorado to offer a three-semester sequence in museum and gallery studies, said Jennie Kiessling, art instructor. The sequence incorporates strong field-based internships as well as classes in art, history, philosophy, and museum and gallery studies itself.

The Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 201 S. College Ave. “Object, No Object” has an entrance on the plaza level, in the former ArtsCool space.

The hours for the Dec. 3 exhibition are noon to 9 p.m. as the exhibit matches the evening hours for the First Friday gallery walk in downtown Fort Collins.

Admission is free to “Object, No Object: Sculpture of Ideas.” Admission to the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (65 or older), $6 for students (with valid ID), $5 for youth (7-18), and free for museum members and children 6 and under.

Well, as some of you may know, Tour de Fat, the annual
New Belgium Beer bike festival was in Fort Collins last week. In preparation for the event, I created a dress for myself out of keg caps. I worked on this dress during my stints at
Streetmosphere, an awesome program put on by our local Arts Organization, Beet Street. Essentially they ask artists of all kinds to come out and do their stuff on the streets of Fort Collins. A good thing...in so many ways. So, anyway, I promised people I would post a picture of my dress once it was done, so here it is folks!! Streetmosphere continues until October. See you around town!

Shambala Community Center Project

I was invited by the fine folks at the Shambala Community Center to help them create a Community Arts project to help the center create its vision for the next five years. We created mandalas that had strips of paper in which the participants wrote their inner and outer aspirations for the center. The Center will use these ideas and aspirations to help form their mission for the next five years. Here are some pictures of the process and the finished mandalas strung together in a communal form. I will be a presenting Artist at the Creative Garden section of New West Fest in Fort Collins this weekend. The Creative Garden is a new aspect of New West Fest. This space was devised by the clever folks at Beet Street to give festival goers a shady place to hang out and meet artisans working on different pieces of work. I will be there Saturday and Sunday (August 21 & 22) from 3:00-4:00 working on my zipper baskets. Stop by and say "Hi". Here is the official description of the Creative Gardens Concept.

The "LOCAL" show is up for one more weekend at Luscious Nectar. I went by last weekend to check out the display and found out that one of my pieces, "May Cause Dizziness" has sold! Garbage Garage Recycled fence Mural

Here are some pictures of the recycled Fence Mural I created with the help of some community members. Everyone decorated a clothes hanger with recycled items such as keys, wire, beads, etc. Then, we put all of the finished pieces together is a sort of quilt on the fence at the Garbage Garage education Center. The pieces had to be very secure because it gets mighty windy out at the Larimer County Landfill. We hope to continue to add to the fence through future workshops.

This show, at the Boulder Library will have it's Opening Reception this Friday May 7 from 5-7 pm. Pictured here is CURTAIN CALL. I created this piece using 1,000 slides from the bookstore at Wind Cave National Park. I only had 5 days to drill and assemble the piece. I am looking forward to seeing it installed. I dropped off work today to be in the "LOCAL" show at Luscious Nectar. If you haven't been, Luscious Nectar is truly Luscious if you enjoy frozen alcoholic drinks. Every flavor you can imagine! Tomorrow is the opening for the show and 80's night as well. When I told them I LIVED 80's night no one really got it, oh well. Here is photo of "May Cause Dizziness", one of the pieces in the show. It is made using recycled plastic pill bottles.

It always happens like this, especially in the Springtime. There are THREE different events this Thursday that I would like to attend, but, alas, I am one person. The First is a Recycled Fashion show done by Colorado State University Students in the university’s student chapter of the Fashion Group International. The show will be Thursday night at 8pm, the theme will be "Alice in Wonderland" more info can be found here. The second event is Fort Collins Arts Engagement Summit. I think I can possibly make this and the Art Auction in Denver for Think 360 Arts. The Inspired Art Project takes poems written by Denver's youth and asks local artists to create original works inspired by their words. All submitted and accepted pieces will be featured in the Inspired Art Show auction on April 29th, 2010 at the Space Gallery with proceeds going to support America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts. This project offers a new way to show the power and impact of the words of Denver students, and brings to life their creativity and imagination. The piece I created for this event is pictured here, it is called "How it is to be a Floor". Check out more information about this cool event here

GARBAGE GARAGE OPEN HOUSE

I will be at the Garbage Garage on Saturday to help celebrate their Earth Day Open HOuse. I will be running a workshop for a fence mural made of recycled items. Here is a press release for the event:

Who says learning about trash isn’t fun? Not visitors to the Garbage Garage, Larimer County’s waste and recycling education center. Adults and kids of all ages are invited to come see for themselves and celebrate Earth Day at an open house scheduled for Saturday, April 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Fun, food, games, and activities such as making a methane collector, composting demonstrations, and creating art from trash–as well as giveaways--await visitors. Local magician Cody Landstrom will once again provide entertainment. Be there for the unveiling of the Center’s newest interactive educationl exhibit, “History of Trash,” which depicts how trash has been handled through the centuries. Professionally designed and created by Plaid Dog Studios in Loveland, visitors will see that trash and garbage disposal has an interesting history and will continue to be an issue in the future as well.

In addition, the other colorful and educational displays that teach the three “Rs,” reducing, reusing, and recycling will help visitors learn more about how to manage their trash. Learn how a solar collector works and take a walk through the trash tunnel. Patty Packrat, the Garbage Garage “spokesrat,” is seen on several displays, leading the visitor through the maze of fun and interesting exhibits.

The Garbage Garage is located at the Larimer County Landfill on S. Taft Hill Road, Fort Collins, about two miles south of Harmony Road. There is never an entrance fee. FRONT RANGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE ART SHOW

During my Graduate Program at MICA, I earned Americorps credits to take college classes. Needless to say, right after that experience, the last thing I wanted to do was go back to school. But...a few years have passed and now I am enjoying taking classes to learn new skills just for fun. It is strange to not worry about a grade and I can't say I am doing great job blowing things off, I guess I love to learn new things. Anyway, during the past year I have been attending classes at Front Range Community College. I entered my first jewelry project into the student show and it was juried in!! THis piece, called "Tangled Necklace" is made out of sterling silver. The show will be up at Student center at The Fort Collins Campus of FRCC until May 4th.

My Cabinet for the City of Fort Collins Art in Public Places program will be located at 224 Canyon, in Old Town Fort Collins. This is the tall yellow building across from the Canyon City Chop House. My concept is to create a piece reflecting the City of Fort Collins by concentrating on the water landscape of the City as opposed to other manmade landmarks such as roads. GIRL SCOUT TRANSFORMER CABINET DESIGN

Girl Scout Troop 2258 has been chosen to design three Transformer Murals for the City of Fort Collins. We plan on working with the participants at Elderhaus to create these murals. Here are pictures of two of our proposed cabinet and our descriptive paragraph about the project.

Hi this is Girl Scout Troop 2258 and these are our ideas and descriptions for our transformer cabinets. The people in the Elderhaus class will help us with the design of these cabinets by providing handprints, drawings, memories or colors to bring out their personalities. We will use have several ways to incorporate these ideas. The first transformer cabinet will have traced hands, we will trace the hands of the Elderhaus participants and ourselves as well as people who might stop by and look at our work. These tracings will be filled with colors and designs to make a vibrant display. The second Transformer Cabinet will have colorful spots all over it. These spots represent the people of Fort Collins. The Third Transformer Cabinet will be a combination of several designs. All of these designs will have drawings of the memories of the Elderhaus participant inside them. Some designs are geometric, some are organic blobs and some are wavy lines representing the Poudre River.

The best part is, the Girls are running this show, with a little help from their leaders and parents. It should be an exciting Summer!

The Canyon Gallery presents Resurrections: ECO-logy and ECO-nomy, coordinated by Jennifer Heath. Resurrections addresses our enormous waste and ways in which we can reclaim and transform materials from the scrap heap. Works of functional art are made form trash – from bottle caps, water bottles, tin cans, plastic bags and plastic-coated wire to old tires and other clean rubbish.

Included in the exhibition are insights from the future generation. EcoHero Capes is created by children in he Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Art Stop on the Go” children’s art program. Molly Hoverstock’s Casey Middle School Art class considers the plights of undersea creatures. Books of poetry by children from Lise Blumenthal’s fifth graders at Whittier Elementary School describe Things to Save and Recycled Language.

Three satellite shows are also on display. Rising Tides: Trashing the Ocean is built around ten panels that demonstrate the ubiquity of plastic waste in our oceans. Twilight’s Last Gleaming: Nuclear Waste describes our invisible “ultimate trash,” leftovers from our continuing expansion of nuclear power. The library’s bridge display case features Reincarnation: Deconstruction and the Building Material Life Cycle, an exhibit by ReSource Woodworks, from May 3 to May 30.

The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art hosts Upcycled: Summer Collection 2010, fashions made from trash, June 11 to September 3, curated by Joan Markowitz with Jennifer Heath.

Additionally, a variety of related theatre, film, and musical events take place throughout May and June (see attached calendar).

Transformer Cabinet Process

I have two Transformer Cabinet Mural projects going on right now. I have been chosen, individually, to paint a cabinet by myself at the SE corner of the building at 224 Canyon, Fort Collins, CO. At the same time, I am leading my Girl Scout Troop through a project where they are decorating three cabinets with the fine folks at Elderhaus. This is a great opportunity for these fabulous girls. Not only are they learning about community art, but also teaching art and creating art in a public context. I am really allowing them to own this process. The first step of that process was the initial design meeting with Fort Collins Utilities. It went well and I am so proud of these girls! We chose three different designs for each cabinet. New Work

Lately, I have been experimenting with different ways to assemble mass quantities of items. I have been weaving them together for years, but how else could they be presented in a sustainable way? I have been using trays found at my local Thrift Stores. The idea of presentation is the reason for the trays, you can find a wide variety, from ornate silver trays to cheap-o metal tacky trays. This piece, "Choking Hazard" will be part of an exhibit at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) called "GAME PLAY". Game Play explores artists’ interests in and inspirations from games. For the finale of our 33rd season, the Larimer Chorale will perform Haydn’s masterpiece THE CREATION, a magnificent musical interpretation of the creation stories told in the books of Genesis and Psalms and John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

The performance will be enhanced by a visual perspective of creation-themed works by area artists, projected on stage during the concert to create a unique synthesis of the visual and musical arts in a glorious celebration of the natural world around us.

Join us prior to the show to view the work of area artists, who have submitted their best CREATIONS and will be offering them for sale.

The silent auction of this work, to benefit the Chorale, will be held online during the month of April as well as prior to the performance at the Lincoln Center.

Eco Creations Opening Tonight!

Tonight is the opening reception for Eco Creations at the Muse Gallery in Longmont, CO. Eco Creations is a juried exhibition of art made from recycled materials and found objects with featured artist & guest juror Bruce Campbell.

EcoCreations Artists include: Bill Ikler, Boris Sarikov, Carol Baum, Corina Gertz, Joni Carr, Karen Adler, Katy Diver, Lauren Emery, Loraine Anderson, Lynn Dettloff, Margaret Donharl, Margaret Donharl, Mary Behling, Susan Martino, William LeDesma, and Elizabeth Morisette.

This is my entry for the Inspired Art show at the Space Gallery. The Inspired Art Project takes poems written by Denver's youth and asks local artists to create original works inspired by their words. All submitted and accepted pieces will be featured in the Inspired Art Show auction on April 29th, 2010 at the Space Gallery with proceeds going to support America SCORES Denver and Think 360 Arts. This project offers a new way to show the power and impact of the words of Denver students, and brings to life their creativity and imagination.

How It Is To Be A Floor

I’m the floor of a house. Every time someone steps on me I laugh. But the people can’t hear me. Whenever they step on my belly I laugh hard. Sometimes when they step on my eye I get some dirt in it. But I love when they step on my back. When people step on my mouth I want to swallow them but I don’t.

Union of Concerned Scientists Show Installation Photo

FIBER: TWENTY TEN

Putnam Science fair

Saturday Afternoon, I will be at the Garbage Garage Booth at the Putnam School of Art and ScienceScience Carnival from 11-3:00. We will be making recycled paper hats.

Now in its fifth year, the science carnival features booths with activities and displays by prominent local, state and federal organizations including Bird Olympics by Master Naturalists; the Hewlett Packard Boo Crew; Rocky Mountain Raptor Program; the Colorado State University Little Shop of Physics; CSU BSPM and Biology Departments; and the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. In addition, the carnival will offer numerous hands-on fun and educational activities for children of all ages including live animals, science-themed games, food and prizes.

Visitors may also participate in a silent auction for various themed baskets assembled by students.

Admission is $2 per person and includes full access to all activities (food not included); children 5 and under are free.

Proceeds from the event will help send Putnam's fifth-graders to ECO week in the fall. Eighty percent of Putnam's students qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch program, making raising funds to assist students to attend ECO week critical. The Science Carnival provides a big boost to those efforts.

Garden Flag Workshop at the Garbage Garage

Saturday from 10-12 I will be at the Garbage Garage (at the Larimer County Landfill) teaching a workshop on how to make recycled Garden Flags. This workshop will show you how to make your own designs and print them on recycled fabric. Come by my studio at The Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art to Check out the new work and say "Hi". FCMOCA will be hosting the opening of "The Looking Glass", photographs by Lynn Goldsmith in the Loft Gallery. Old Town is also hosting Great Plates this month, so if you can bear the crowds, it should be a nice night downtown. Hope to see you around!

Multicultural Art Show at AIMS

Tomorrow night is the opening of the Multicultural Art Show at AIMS Community College in Greeley, CO. This piece, Grandmas Tag-Eleanor (pictured here) will be featured in the The Multicultural Show in the AIMS gallery. They will also have a show they are calling 'Salon de Refuse" showing the pieces not included in the show, I have one piece there as well. Should be a neat time.

The Multi-Cultural Juried Exhibition will be located in the Aims Student Gallery in Ed Beaty Hall from March 4 until March 26. The Salon de Refuse will feature works that are not selected for the juried exhibition and will be open in Ed Beaty Hall Room 110 for one night only on March 4, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Transformer Mural Project

The City of Fort Collins is almost completely free of overhead wires. This is one of the qualities that makes the city a wonderful place to live. The disadvantage of buried power lines is that a Transformer cabinet has to be situated every few blocks. These cabinets are a prime space for taggers to leave their mark. To dissuade this, the City Arts in Public Places Program has sponsored a Transformer Mural Project where artists are asked to submit a proposal to paint a cabinet. The results are often whimsical and always a colorful way to deter graffiti and brighten up the streets of Fort Collins.

I am pleased to say I have been chosen to paint a mural this year! My mural will be a colorful radiation of lines based on the waterbodies surrounding Fort Collins. I will post pictures of the process. Thanks Fort Collins!

ECO CREATIONS at the Muse Gallery
